This paper describes the application of reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) methodology and cost optimization to the development of maintenance & cost management for the plant of Hard Chrome Plating. The main objective of reliability-centered maintenance and cost optimization is the effective maintenance & cost management of the plant components inherent reliability value. Consequently, this research aims to manage the costs necessary to extend the service life of a plant through the use of probabilistic methods and simulation techniques in order to better identify the importance of every components in a plant with respect to maintenance costs. As a result of this research, our costing model allows to develop a methodology to determine maintenance costs which must be applied to some subsets of the elements of a plant, grouped according to their criticality and to identify the gap of costs between the true solution and the optimal maintenance interval.

Creating PRODUCTIVE Workers in Industrial Context from the Definition of Thermal Comfort (pp. 75-84)

The human action among environment concerns and countries development is being debated by several authors. Thermal comfort is an extremely broad concept directly related to ergonomics, energy buildings consumption and workers’ performance. The present paper intends to analyse the thermal environment inside of a Portuguese manufacturing metalworking industry in order to understand its influence in worker’s performance and well-being. For this purpose, two types of studies were conducted: analytical and empirical. The analytical exploration regards the indoor thermal environment study concerning two thermal indexes: EsConTer and THI. The empirical exploration consists in workers’ thermal sensation study, regarding a thermal colour scale based in ASHRAE seven-point thermal scale. Therefore a measuring instrument was used, ‘Testo 435-4’, to collect air temperature (oC), air relative humidity (%) and wet bulb temperature (oC) data. The EsConTer index was the most surprising applied method since it showed itself capable to describe the thermal environment of an industrial space due to its correlation with THI, and at the same time adequate to define workers’ thermal sensation. Moreover, the authors consider thermal environment studies in workplaces an important aspect to improve the productivity of workers in business contexts.

An Investigation of Container Loading Problem Dealing with Irregular Shape Shipment (pp. 67-74)

Container loading problem (CLP) is a category of problems that describing the scenarios of packing shipments into containers. It has been discussed in the fields of logistics, industrial engineering, transportation (civil) engineering, and operational management for many years. However, handling irregular shape shipment was not been investigated in-depth, such as algorithms of overlap searching, schemes of placing items, real world constraints, and damage control. This paper is dedicated to investigate and understanding the complexity and difficulties of the CLP involving irregular shape shipment, especially when closely related to industrial conditions. Beyond the previous works, the problem statement in this paper is formed with the idea of reflecting the real world scenarios and illuminating future research direction. In order to maximize the benefit of this paper to the industries, multiple methods and candidates are proposed that are collected from other fields. This paper includes overview of the factors related to irregular shape CLP that is worthy to concern while working on the next generation of great CLP approaches, particularly in handling irregular shape shipments.

Growth Patterns of Small Manufacturing Firms Before Failure: Interconnections with Financial Ratios and Nonfinancial Variables (pp. 59-66)

This study focuses on the pre-failure growth in total assets, debt and sales of bankrupted manufacturing firms. Based on a sample of 128 Estonian firms, it is shown that two distinct growth patterns can be outlined. When the first pattern shows a gradual decline, then the other characterizes a more eclectic growth behavior. Several classical financial ratios have significantly different values through the established two patterns. Managers’ characteristics do not vary among the established patterns.

A Metaheuristic ACO to Solve the Multi-Depot Vehicle Routing Problem with Backhauls (pp. 49-58)

In this paper, a metaheuristic algorithm based on the ant colony optimization is presented to solve the multi-depot vehicle routing problem with delivery and collection of package. Each performed route consists of one sub-route in which only the delivery task is done, in addition to one sub-route in which only the collection process is performed. The proposed algorithm tries to find the best order to visit the customers at each performed route. In addition, the proposed approach determines the best connection between the sub-routes of delivery and collection, in order to obtain a global solution with the minimum travelling cost. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated by considering a set of instances adapted from the literature. The computational results have been compared with a greedy heuristic algorithm based on the nearest neighborhood approach. Finally, conclusions and suggestions for future works are presented.
